Obituary for Alfred Miller III
November 6, 1942 – December 9, 2025
Alfred Miller III (Fred), 83, went home to be with our Lord on December 9, 2025. A beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and businessman, Fred lived a life marked by faith, integrity and joyful service to others.
Born in Jacksonville on November 6, 1942, Fred grew up with a strong sense of responsibility, purpose and devotion to fitness – qualities that would define his personal and professional life. He attended Robert E. Lee High School (’60) where he lettered in swimming and football. It was there he met the love of his life, Mandy Harby (‘61) whom he would marry in 1965. He then attended the University of the South (Sewanee) where he majored in English, was a volunteer fireman, lettered in swimming and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. The years spent “on the mountain” and the many friends he made there marked his life forever.
Fred’s professional career was varied, successful, and always guided by his entrepreneurial
spirit. He began his professional life in the family printing business, Miller Press, before
becoming a founding partner of an advertising and marketing firm. Later, he established the Fred Miller Group, a residential real estate company where he poured his energy, wisdom, and leadership until his retirement in 2020.
Beyond his work, Fred devoted himself to civic and community life around Jacksonville,
including Meninak, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (a founding member of the local chapter), the 200 Club of Jacksonville, Salvation Army, North East Florida Association of Realtors, Evergreen Cemetary Association, Evergreen Funeral Home, YMCA, St Mark’s Episcopal Day School, St Mark’s Episcopal Church and Timuquana Country Club, among others.
Fred was deeply committed to the Lord. In 1989 he accepted a calling to work with Eastern
European Seminary where, for weeks, he traveled alone behind the Iron Curtain smuggling in Bibles and other Christian literature before, most importantly, spreading the Good News in clandestine prayer groups. His church, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, is where he found enduring fellowship, spiritual nourishment, and countless opportunities to serve. His faith was the foundation upon which he built his life, and he sought to honor God in all that he did.
Fred was also an avid outdoorsman whose happiest days were spent hunting, fishing, camping, or driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway—places where he felt closest to God’s creation. Those who knew him best will remember his stories around the campfire, his appreciation for simplicity, and the peaceful joy he found in the natural world.
A loyal and steadfast friend, Fred cherished relationships that spanned decades. He valued
people deeply and made everyone around him feel seen, supported, and genuinely cared for. But above all, Fred fiercely loved his family. His greatest joy was found in his wife, children, and grandchildren, whose lives he shaped with unwavering devotion, guidance, and affection.
Fred was predeceased by his lifelong love, Mary Ann Harby (Mandy) on December 9, 1985 and is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Carol Watson Miller; his sons Alfred Miller IV (Ted and Mary Claire), Nathan Earl Miller (Kat) and Matthew Davidson Miller (Leah); and 7 grandchildren: Alfred V (Quinn), Mary Elizabeth (Mandy), Evelyn Elizabeth (Evelyn) , Ann Genevra (Annie), Hannah Louise (Hannah), Jackson Earl (Jackson) and Thaddeus Hardy (Thad); Fred’s sister, Judith Frame (Judi) and her husband Gene of Hendersonville, NC, six nieces and nephews: Tommy Donahoo, Jr, Liz Bishop, Ashley Bobo, Katie Neuman, Martin Frame and Will Harby; 13 great nieces and nephews; countless friends and admirers.
He leaves behind a legacy of faith, kindness, and enduring love that will live on in all who were blessed to know him.
A service to celebrate Fred’s life will be held on December 16, 2025, at 11 A.M. at St Mark’s Episcopal Church, 4129 Oxford Ave, Jacksonville, FL 32210.

Sandy, thank you for your loving messages over the past few months – and last year when I lost my sister, my brother and my brother-in-law. You have been so loving and supportive, and that means the world to me. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you and all of the LHS classmates over the past three decades – what an amazing group of friends! God bless you, dear friend.
Thank you so much, Maryjane. It’s hard to believe that thirty years have flown by, but they were wonderful years filled with love, friendships and time spent making great memories. I miss him so much. He sure loved his many friends, especially LHS and Sewanee classmates. ❤️
