How to Choose an Urn

How to Choose an Urn

In recent years, more people have chosen cremation due to several reasons including cremation becoming more acceptable, fewer religious restriction, fewer family traditions; people dying at older ages; and a greater flexibility in memorial services. Whether your loved one wished for cremation or the family collective decided in a creation, a cremation is a way to memorialize a loved one.

Just like a burial, a cremation involves planning. One thing a person or his/her family must decide on is what type of urn the ashes will be placed in. Cremated remains are put into a plastic bag and placed into an urn or temporary container. Adult cremated remains weigh between four and six pounds.

At Evergreen Cemetery, Funeral Home & Crematory, we have worked with many families who have chosen cremation and have served the Jacksonville community with our cremation services since 1880.

An urn is the best way to store the ashes. You can either bury the urn, place it in your house, bury it in your yard, or some other options our team can share with you.

How do you choose an urn? Based on the weight of the ashes, our team at Evergreen will let you know what size urn you will need. If you want to keep the urn at the cemetery in a columbarium, we will let you know what size the urn will need to be, as well.

Urns can be made from wood, copper, granite, bronze, glass, marble, ceramic, etc. If the appearance of the urn is important to you, then you can choose a material/design that is aesthetically pleasing, if you plan to keep the urn displayed somewhere.

If the urn needs to travel by air, it’s best to choose glass, so you will have no problem transporting the remains through security.
