Lude Fryer Gillespie Stokes, age 99, died in Jacksonville, Florida on Wednesday, January 10th, 2024.
Lude Fryer Gillespie Stokes was born in St. Vincent’s hospital in Jacksonville, Florida in 1924 to parents John Monroe Gillespie and Nelle Fryer Gillespie. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School (now Riverside), and attended Montreat College in North Carolina. She served in the Foreign Service after World War II and was stationed in Munich and Cairo. She returned to Florida to finish her Political Science degree at the University of Florida. During this time, she met her future husband, Warren Q. (“Jack”) Stokes. Their marriage began in 1959 and continued for more than 65 years until his death in 2013.
Lude was also preceded in death by her only sister, Jane Wooten Gillespie Archibald. She leaves behind her daughter, Nelle Stokes; son-in-law Jeff Butcher; grandsons McClain Butcher and Jacob Butcher; and nieces and nephews John Archibald, Douglas Sessions, Janie Williams, and Leonora Walker, as well as a loving, extended family and many close friends.
Evergreen Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 13th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Johns Presbyterian Church, 4275 Herschel St., Jacksonville, FL 32210. In lieu of flowers, it was Ludie’s wish that memorial donations be made to the charity closest to your heart.
