Merle Coffey

Merle Coffey

Merle Coffey passed away peacefully at home in April 2022 at the age of 94 in Jacksonville Fl.  Born in Nassau, Bahamas to Mervin Lim Sr. And Mary Thompson she had 2 younger siblings.  Merle grew up both in Nassau and in Florida.  While visiting family in Jacksonville she was introduced to Welton Benjamin Coffey Jr. and they were soon wed.  She earned her bachelors and master’s degree at Edward Waters College and received her degree in education.

She began teaching school and had a real love for her students, even creating and drawing her own books to help them learn. Over her 40+ year career as a teacher she was happy to shape, mold, and guide young minds.  She impacted many lives and her students adored her.

Merle was an avid traveler and would often take her grandchildren across America inspiring them both to see the world. She was a part of the First Baptist Choir for many years and would often be seen singing her heart out on TV when the sermons were broadcasted on Sunday.

She was passionate about cooking and loved football, she could always be found watching the game on Sunday or the cooking channel, writing down every recipe she could. You could find her camera in hand taking pictures of her loved ones, making sure every once in a while, to cut off the top of someone’s head out of the photo.

Merle lived her life to the fullest traveling, learning, teaching, and loving her family.

Merle is survived by her son Michael, her Grandson Michael Jr, and her granddaughter Kourteney, her brother Vincent (Barbara), many nieces, nephews and extended family and the many friends that loved her.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 23rd at Evergreen Funeral Home Chapel, 4535 Main Street, Jacksonville, Florida.  Visitation will begin at 10:00 am and continue until the time of the service.  Arrangements are under the direction and care of Evergreen Funeral Home and Crematory – (904) 353-3649.
