Sarah Shanks was born to Slater and (“Pinky”) Eddie Lula (Morrison) Shanks on August 16,1931 in Valdosta, Georgia.
After Lula’s death, she was raised by Slater and (“Tiny”) Irene (Morrison) Shanks. Sarah graduated from high school then attended Secretarial College. She then moved from Valdosta to Jacksonville, Florida where she met and married Commadore Perry.
Sarah was a faithful member of the East Side and later the West 27th Street Church of Christ. She held several different jobs, including working as a butcher at the Jacksonville Naval Airbase. Sarah was loved by many for her kindness, wisdom, generosity and cooking. She enjoyed reading the bible, gardening and baking. For many years she made and sold cakes and pies from her home on Bree Road. Quite a few of those baked goods were given as gifts to family and friends.
She leaves behind three children: Larry Seward, Sarah Frances McLemore (Joe), and Christine Perry-Prince; her two sisters: Lucille Shanks and Louise Shanks; and seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Sarah was proceeded in death by her husband Commadore, brothers David Shanks, Slater Shanks Jr., and Lee Andrew Shanks.
We are at peace knowing that she is in the comforting arms of our Father and no longer burdened by the many struggles she faced in her life here on earth. We are thankful for the many years we were blessed to have her love, advice and guidance present in our lives. Sarah’s memory will forever live on in our hearts and lives.

Larry, Frances and Tina may your hearts be overjoyed with the wonderful memories of Sis Sarah Perry. She was the dearest sister in Christ to my Mother the late sister Catherine Smiley. Until COVID shut down facilities my weekly visits were halted. However, the pictures, memories and videos of those very special times we shared will always be of a reminder of a wonderful Christian soilder. A Mother who told me the story of how God brought her through every situation from child rearing to the sacrifices for her family, education and a relationship with God were her top priority. Even though I reached out after COVID until this moment I had no knowledge of her transition to heaven. However, I am grateful for the many, many times we had lunch, visits and her teaching my 5 yo granddaughter how to pray and why. Again, Larry, Frances and Tina be of good cheer, she made my world a much better place. Thank you and God bless.
