Shirley Dobson Hackett passed away on Monday, January 3, 2022 at the age of 82 in Orange Park, Florida. Shirley was born on June 29, 1939 to Richard Leonard and Oletha Dobson. She and her two siblings, older sister, Jeanelle and younger brother, Doug were all raised in Jacksonville, Florida.
After graduating from Andrew Jackson High School, she married David Shier Hackett, Jr. and together they had three children: Elizabeth Yvonne (Wilson), Richard David, and Deborah Lynn (Dell). When her children were older, Shirley went back to school to study nursing and graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in 1983.
Shirley was a beautiful person inside and out. She had a deep love of music and singing and sang in church choirs. She also enjoyed crafting, cooking and decorating cakes. Most of all, she loved her family. After many years of working in doctor’s offices and in home health care, she took care of both of her parents until they passed away. She also helped to care for four of her grandchildren until they were school age while their parents worked. It was her firm belief that the best care in life came from those who loved you the most.
Shirley leaves behind her ex-husband, David, with whom she shared a deep friendship; her sister, Jeanelle Leybourne; her brother, Doug Dobson (Marilyn); her two daughters, Yvonne Wilson and Debbie Dell (Michael) and six grandchildren, Amanda, Kristen, Bradley, Katie, Justin and Jessica; her two great-grandchildren, Kenzie and Damon as well as many nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her son, Rick Hackett.
A memorial service for Shirley will be held at South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church on March 19 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heritage Singers of Jacksonville or the music fund for South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church. The mailing address for both is South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church, 2137 Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32207.
