Shirley Olivia Brooks

Shirley Olivia Brooks

Shirley Olivia Brooks (née Frasier) was born on October 15, 1934 in Jacksonville, Florida. She peacefully departed this life in her sleep on June 25, 2025. She was 90.

Born to Aretha Frasier, who worked as a housekeeper, Shirley was a graduate of Matthew W. Gilbert High School. She worked as a custodian for Duval County Public Schools before becoming a housekeeper herself. Because of her excellent rapport with her clients, she was treasured across many households beyond her own. Shirley was a servant of God and a maker — with her generous hands, she made her famous Tollhouse cookies, sock-it-to-me cakes, and seasonal macramé creations by the dozen. She enjoyed a good plate of soul food, people-watching, twirling her baton, country music, and talking on the phone with her friends, especially her trusted friend and neighbor Ms. Mary Lee Dicks. She built a peaceable life marked by faith, laughter, resourcefulness, and a loving nature.

She is preceded in death by her firstborn daughter Rae Jean Brooks, grandchild HaKeem Canty, cherished cousin and lifelong confidant Hazel Gwendolyn Perry (Leroy Sr.), aunt Lucille Frazier, mother Aretha Frasier, and grandmother Carrie Frazier.

She is survived by her children, Ontroy Brooks, Faye Brooks, and Carol Frazier; grandchildren KaTrina Griffin, Tavares Watson, MarKeshia Garrison-Boyd (Malcolm), RaeJeana Brooks, Stacey Ivory, Ontroy Brooks Jr., Troy Canty; great-grandchildren Marquis Bell, Emory Griffin III, Nyana Griffin, Gemory Griffin, Jade Ivory, Jermaine Ivory, Journey Ivory, Tavares Jr., and 6 great-great grandchildren. Her cousins include Anthony Perry, Leroy Perry Jr., Gwendolyn Earl (Russell), Russell Earl Jr., Rhonda Earl, William Earl, Anthony Perry Jr., DéShantelle Perry, and Leon Perry. A host of additional friends and relatives remain earth side as keepers of her memory.

Family friend Mr. David Thomas often took her to the places she needed to go. As she travels beyond this plane to join her departed loved ones and the Lord, may we all carry her legacy forward with us in our lives. May we sustain her memory as memories of her sustain us.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday July 3, 2025 at the Evergreen Funeral Home Chapel, 4535 Main Street, Jacksonville, FL 32206.  Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the time of the Funeral service.  The Evergreen Chapel is located at the base of the bell tower on the grounds of Evergreen Cemetery.  Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction and care of Evergreen Funeral Home – (904) 353-3649
