No one wants to go to a funeral. Funerals are sad and they symbolize that our loved one is no longer with us. However, they are an opportunity for us to honor our loved one and to be there for our loved one’s closest family members and friends.
When you attend funeral services, you are a guest, just like at a wedding or baby shower. Since you are there to offer love and support, you want to be following funeral etiquette and behave as best you can, because you don’t want to make people uncomfortable and cause more pain for a grieving family.
At Evergreen Cemetery, Funeral Home & Crematory in Jacksonville, we’ve experienced our share of funerals to know what appropriate and inappropriate behavior looks like, so we wanted to share some behaviors and things to avoid during funeral services to be respectful to the family.
- Avoid showing up late. Try to get there before services begin, so you can get settled in. You don’t want to have the room looking at you as you interrupt the service. Give yourself extra time to show up to the services. If you arrive late, be as respectful as possible and enter through a side door or aisle, don’t talk, and shut/open doors quietly.
- Do not talk during the services. There will be plenty of time to talk after the services, whether at a reception at the funeral home or gathering elsewhere. Talking will distract those around you.
- Do not use your phone and silence it/turn it off during the service. By playing with your phone, you can distract those around you and also give the impression that you are disintereted with what is going on. If you are forced to use your phone or you have an emergency, use it outside. Do not take photos during the service, unless the family allows it.
- Do not share an inappropriate story. Avoid “oversharing” or going into too much detail. Don’t air any secrets or any information that can make the family uncomfortable.
