Vera Roberts, 92, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2017 in the mountains of N. Carolina. Formerly of Jacksonville and Miami, Florida and Calera, Alabama, she moved to Sylva, NC in 2007.
Daughter of the late Charles William and Helen Elizabeth (Nell) Roberts, she was also preceeded in death by her son Freddy Mortillaro, brother Charles, and sisters Helen Griser and Dorothy Carver; nephews James Griser and Charles William Roberts; great nephew Erich Wilkinson.
She is survived by her nieces Charon Carver of Michigan, Cathey (Clyde) Harrison of Sylva, and Pam (Russ) Taylor of Jacksonville; nephew Vernon (Wilma) Roberts of Texas and many other nieces and nephews. She also leaves great nieces Jeannine (Kenneth) Suda and Michele (Donnie) Arrowood of Atlanta, Sarah (Paul) Engleman of Michigan, Dallas (Steven) Riley and Nicole Roberts Marcell of Texas; great nephews Thomas (Kay) Harrison of Jacksonville, Daniel Harrison (Lunor) of Denver, and Nic (Melissa) Sanford of Asheville.
After graduating Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, Florida she was employed by the Bell Telephone Company in the 1940s. Always active in the Catholic Church and community wherever she lived, she was a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas (Jacksonville), Past President of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (Miami), a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and many other charities where she provided much cheer with her sense of humor and famous smile.

A Funeral Mass will be held in Sylva on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services with Father James Cahill officiating. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida on May 27, 2017.
